Automotive Shredder Residue Separation and Refuse Derived Fuel Production Program

Absrtact
After end-of-life vehicle (ELV) shredding, separating, and recycling the valuable materials by the ELV shredder plants, there are still nearly30% automobile shredder residue (ASR). ASR is a highly heterogeneous material, which main components include plastic (23~41%),rubber/elastomer (9~21%), metal (6~13%), and glass (10~20%),depending on such factors as the year of manufacturing, brands, displacements, and types of vehicles, etc. The processing technology and the disassembling process in the recycling stage also cause the composition of ASR to be different. All the ELV shredder plants in Taiwan send ASR to incinerator. Since the combustibles in ASR are between 50~85%, the incombustibles are between 14~50%, and ASRcontains glass and foam, it causes ASR softening and agglomeration in the incinerator. Therefore, the incinerator operators are unwilling to process ASR, which results in the storage of large amounts of ASR in ELV shredder plants. Because ASR is a flammable high-thermal material, the storage of ASR for ELV shredder plants is highly risky. Therefore, there is an urgent need to seek resourcization of ASR to solve the ASR destocking problem. The purpose of this project is to pulverize, separate and recycle ASR. Through the continuous screening process, the glass fragments, plastics, and metals mixed with dust are separated, and incombustibles are also screened out. The reusable valuable metals are separated, and the plastic is pelletized into plastic pellets. The residual mixture is then made into a solid recovered fuel (SRF) product, which increases the added-value of ASR and commercializes ASR to solve the ASR destocking problem.
